1. Talking with Kids Teams Up Again with NBC
[return to top]

For the second year in a row, Talking with Kids About Tough Issues has teamed up with NBC's The More You Know campaign in a national initiative to support parent-child communication. This season's The More You Know public service announcements cover a wide range of topics, from smoking and prejudice to mentoring and parental involvement. They feature stars Alex Kingston and Goran Visnjic ("ER"), Joshua Malina ("The West Wing"), Christopher Meloni ("Law & Order: Special Victims Unit"), and Brittany Snow ("American Dreams").

2. New Guide on Teen Sex Available for Parents [return to top]

Our last issue of Talking with Kids covered an episode of the CBS daytime soap "The Young and the Restless," where 15-year-old Lily Winters is pressured into having unprotected sex with a young man she met on the Internet. Since that episode aired, we have received a number of email messages from parents asking for advice on how to raise the topic of sex with their children, especially teens. "Parent Power: What Parents Need to Know and Do to Prevent Teen Pregnancy" is a good place to start. Published by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, it provides important tips that parents can use to help their teens understand sexual activity and includes findings on what teens want their parents to know.

3. Tip of the Month: Listen to Your Child [return to top]

During the rush of the holidays, it's easy to forget that this is also an important time to give our kids some undivided attention. As said by Joshua Malina of "The West Wing," in NBC's The More You Know public service announcement: "You want to give your kids a really cool gift? Then give them your time. They'll never get tired of that." While communication is key, it's listening carefully that helps us to better understand what our children really want to know, as well as what they already understand.
