1. Talking with Kids About War and the News
[return to top]

These days, talk of terrorist violence and war against Iraq is all around us in the media. Whether it's the local newspaper, nightly TV newscasts, cable news networks, news radio, or Web sites, graphic footage and accounts of the latest happenings in the world are being delivered into our homes 24 hours a day. This constant flow of information can be overwhelming for adults, but it can be especially confusing and frightening for children.

Published originally after the September 11 terrorist attacks, this special section of our Talking with Kids About Tough Issues Web site is a valuable resource for parents, teachers and community leaders.

2. Tip of the Month: Explore Age-Appropriate News [return to top]

Whether and how kids should consume the news really depends on the child and how that news is presented. As parents, we all sense that kids today are growing up too fast. The simple truth is that they have access to more information than previous generations. To help you decide what's right for your child, Talking with Kids describes three different age groups and the possible effects of their exposure to news.
