1.
This November and Beyond, Encourage Kids to Reject Smoking

The National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information informs us that today, an estimated 47 million US adults smoke; approximately 80% of tobacco users initiate use before age 18. The annual Great American Smokeout, held on November 15, encourages smokers to commit to quitting; parents can help prevent their kids from taking a first puff by talking with them early--between the ages of 8 and 12--and often about this unhealthy habit.

2. The Holidays are a Good Time to Talk about Alcohol [return to top]

As the festive Holiday season approaches, children may have increased exposure to alcohol. Kids may be curious about the actions of adults, which may include higher rates of alcohol consumption than usual. National studies show that the average age when a child first tries alcohol is 11, and many kids start becoming curious about these substances even sooner. It's important for parents and caring adults to talk with kids about alcohol and its potential dangers.

3. "I Have a Story to Tell": Talking with Kids about Substance Abuse
[return to top]

"Talking with Kids" wants to highlight how parents have been explaining substance abuse to their children. Parents will soon be able to visit the TWK site and read other parents' stories. Tell us yours!
