1. Summer Vacation Brings Many Opportunities to Talk with Your
Kids
[return

It's the time
of the year kids have been waiting for: summer vacation. Our kids
will be engaged in all sorts of activities, whether they attend
summer camp, watch summer reruns, get together with friends or
play in the local park. Whatever your kids are doing, they will
be exposed to new events, ideas and situations that you, the parent,
can help explain. Quality time at home, as well as summertime
family gatherings-backyard barbecues, Fourth of July picnics,
and camping trips-can be great opportunities to bond and talk
with your kids. Help keep your kids informed and safe this summer
by talking to them early and often about sex, drugs and alcohol,
violence and HIV/AIDS.

Tip of the Month: Create an Open Environment [return

You may not
think so, but children want to talk about tough issues with their
parents if they feel we will be open to their questions. You can
help by creating an open-minded environment. Try to be positive
and support their curiosity, and ask if they have questions. If
you're willing to listen, your kids will be more willing to talk.
