1. President
Clinton provides Talking with Kids campaign support
[return to top]
President
Clinton announced his commitment to end youth violence and reiterated
the value of parent-child communication as an effective tool in
helping to prevent youth violence. He cited the Talking with Kids
about Tough Issues campaign as the leading initiative in the counry
on parent-child communication and offered to provide support for
the campaign.
On May 10,
just twenty days after the school tragedy in Colorado, President
Clinton convened sixty opinion leaders for a summit on youth and
violence. Some of the participants in the meeting included Vice
President Al Gore, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, Tipper Gore,
poet Maya Angelou, America On-Line CEO Steve Case, singer Gloria
Estefan, movie-industry lobbyist Jack Valenti, actor Andrew Shue
and Kaiser Family Foundation President Drew Altman. The Clinton
Administration will support Talking With Kids to help spread the
message of the value of earlier parent-child communication on
tough issues, like violence. As part of this effort, new public
service messages featuring real kids with a call-to-action by
President Clinton will be produced and distributed in the next
few months. Additionally, a parent guide with tips and resources
for parents on how to talk with their kids about tough issues
like violence will be available at 1-800-CHILD-44
and online at www.talkingwithkids.org.
