1. Talking
with Kids about Safety: Dr. Richard Gallagher
[return

On Tuesday,
June 25th, Dr. Richard Gallagher, Talking with Kids Honorary Committee
member, appeared on ABC's "Good Morning America" to
discuss how parents can talk to their kids to help ease their
fears over their safety, in light of the recent Utah kidnapping
of Elizabeth Smart. Dr. Gallagher said, "I think it's very
important to let kids know the facts, to be able to tell them
exactly what happened. And then also to [tell them] how unlikely
these events are to occur." And, if your child watches the
news, take the opportunity to talk with them about what they see.

Tip
of the Month: Address Their Fears
[return

Tragic and/or
violent events, whether real or pretend, can upset children. Make
sure you understand their fears. Talk with them about what they've
seen in movies or at school. Help them understand the difference
between the violence they may see on television or in video games,
and real life. It may also help to set strict rules about watching
violence on television or at the movies, to limit their exposure
to upsetting behavior.
