1. "Supporting Children in the Digital
Village" - Parents Beware of Content on the Internet
[return
to top]
Top new media
industry leaders are meeting with academics and advocates on July
25 at Stanford University to discuss children's access to quality
content in a wide range of new media. Hosted by Children Now,
the discussion will feature a keynote address by Federal Communications
Commission
Chairman William Kennard.
"Industry
has been extremely responsive in contributing hardware to close
the 'Digital Divide,'" said Lois Salisbury, president of
Children Now. "Now we need to move to the next step, which
is quality content for children. They deserve content that is
fun, interactive, educational, diverse in terms of language and
culture, that includes all races, ages, and physical abilities,
and that is developmentally appropriate for different ages."
Sponsors are
AT&T Broadband, Nickelodeon, Stanford University Department
of Communication, the University of Southern California Annenberg
School for Communication, and the American Center for Children
and Media, a children's media organization based in Chicago. Participants
include executives from Yahoo! Inc., AT&T Broadband, Nickelodeon
and Excite@Home just to name a few. Excite@Home will produce a
live Webcast of the discussion.
