1. Talking with Kids on CBS' "The Young and the Restless"

On a recent episode of the CBS daytime soap "The Young and the Restless," 15-year-old Lily Winters is pressured into having unprotected sex with a young man she met over the Internet. This encounter puts Lily at risk for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS. Our newest Talking with Kids public service announcement on Internet safety and teen sex ran immediately following the show, prompting viewers--many of them Talking with Kids subscribers--to visit our Web site and email us questions on how to talk with their children about sex.

2. Tip of the Month: Take the Initiative [return to top]

If your child hasn't started asking questions about sex, look for a good opportunity to bring it up. For younger children, you could bring it up if someone your child knows is pregnant. You can say, "Did you notice that David's mommy's tummy is getting bigger?" then let the conversation move from there. For teens, you may want to bring it up after viewing something on TV, which is what we encouraged parents to do after viewing the recent episode of "The Young and the Restless," when 15-year-old Lily had unprotected sex.
